OC Fair Events Beyond The Fair

oc fair events beyond include agricultural and farming

A fair is a fair and has it’s usual fair stuff with food, rides, contests, and a carnvial atmosphere. Fair? And the OC fair events in Costa Mesa (Orange County) you can count on that lasts for 23 days to be exact.

And while the fun fair may end right at summer’s end or when school starts, 🤔 the fair event remnants last beyond through autumn. You can check out the farm and garden classes, agricultural markets, and make and DIY home contests.

You can also check out the Costa Mesa speedway events as Costa Mesa is home to the motorcycle speedway that the OC fair helped to birth.

When I think of the OC Fair, I think of the New Year’s Day Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena just minutes from Costa Mesa. And the OC Fair may not be filled with roses, but is full of orange inspo and expos. 🟠

Remember, California has a superior fruity advantage, so don’t be surprised if there are unique citrus conversations even when the yearly theme changes. Orange you glad?

And this fair stands out ’cause it’s super family-friendly with all kinds of young kiddo events like the Centennial Farm.

It’s a great exposure to learning about farming culture if you live in a city or the ‘burbs. In California healthy style, there are 8 nearby certified farmers markets (verified to sell what they make, aka organic.

These fit the bill: Laguna Niguel, Irvine, Tustin, and Costa Mesa (where the OC fair is), Santa Ana, Placentia, Huntington Park, Huntington Beach, and Anaheim. And if you need a central place to stay, this Costa Mesa Avenue of the Arts boutique hotel has a garden oasis inside and the exterior has sleek architectural lines (and reminds me of the National Gallery of Art in DC designed by Architect I.M. Pei).

And instead of traveling all around creation in farmers market-related OC Fair events, you can see all of them at the OC Fairgrounds, so you can compare apples to apples. 😃 And oranges to oranges.

And when the OC Fair events are over, besides farms and speedways, you can think about contests that maybe you want to enter for next year if you’re arts and crafty or like to decorate table settings… that’s more my speed. 💕

If you’re missing the carnival fair atmosphere, the California State Carnival is worth checking out in Sacramento, CA.

Arby’s deal with the fixings prepared here: homemade rolls, feta cheese, capers, radishes, pickles, horseradish, and homemade au jus. You can always use Arby’s sauce or horsey sauce, but using your own sauces help to kick up the spice and flavor level if that’s what you want (giving a luxury catered party vibe 🎉… for the $5 price). That’s something to smile about!

And instead of North Carolina barbecue you can have roast beef with your own North Carolina-style vinegar barbecue sauce using white vinegar (or any vinegar you have on hand), Worcestershire sauce, cayenne or red pepper flakes, onion powder, salt and pepper. And who doesn’t love Dijon mustard!?

This Arby’s deal: 5 classic roast beef sandwich deal for $5 is good until 7/2! Just in time for July 4th 🇺🇸 and keep your eyes out for other weekly deals!

You can’t beat the roast beef classic sandwich that has been around as long as I have been around (and longer!)… and maybe you have been too.

And since we’re talking history…

The Arby’s chain started the same 1964 year as the Beatles landed in New York. It’s a true classic with the horsey horseradish sauce. And with the 5 sandwich deal, you can share with 4 other individuals… OR you could make a party smorgasbord like I did where you add your gourmet picnic cheeses like brie. And your fancy cornichons and capers. And voila! you’ve got a sharing platter good for a small party of 3 or more.

PLUS… you’ve got leftover buns for your next holiday 🧨 or other celebration. I mean, c’mon! It doesn’t get any better than this for fast food. And actually lemme give you the skinny on what happened (the fast food part).

Rewinding back my steps… I did the rigamaroll of downloading the Arby’s app in the morning and paying for the sandwiches which came to $4.79 for 5 sandwiches. Umm… isn’t that like 1964 rollback prices? Or what you pay for one sandwich in 2023 inflationary costs?

…When I pulled up to the drive-thru, they couldn’t find my order. Oops!

I saved the confirmation receipt sent to my email and took a photo… I didn’t want to take any chances having never ordered from them this way before. AND I double-checked the location before I left. Boy, that’s a classic #1 mistake: people making reservations at the wrong location. Not tragic but imagine if it’s for a restaurant reservation with others.

I’m a planner so that’s just not me. I wouldn’t want others to have to deal with my lack of planning on their dime. Time is money.

…So, they had me pull up out of the drive-thru and a few short minutes later, handed me a fat brown bag full of these sandwiches. They didn’t even check my confirmation. But of course, that’s because I had it on-hand just in case. And they even apologized for the delay… um, what delay? 😊 Just sayin’.

Then I smiled and drove on my merry way. I took those roast beef beauties home, and enjoyed one as a snack. I disassembled each one probably as carefully and systematically as they were assembled. We took a field trip in kindergarten to ooh and aahh over fast food operations at a local Mickey D’s (but that’s a story for another day! 😅).

I digress, but my inner child remembered.. and I stacked the buns on top cookie-cutter style onto one of the foil paper wrappings that could be reused, and put them in my freezer for a later day. Hey, they are good sesame buns (never eaten) and good for re-purposing on any meat or burger occasion. 🍔

And I took the thinly sliced roast beef and fluffed them up out of their round compactness.

And here we have a delightful picnic you can take along outside or enjoy indoors on a hot summer day. 🧺

Ocean City MD Gem Stays

Ready for your summer Ocean City, MD adventure? Cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and you’re there! It’s still under $5 for cars after all these inflation years.

Ocean City MD gem is the beach I grew up giddy over. 🤸‍♀️

It was a summer teen getaway from suburban life malls (…rough life, I know).

The landmarks are an amusement park, beach, and Fun Island hangout spots where caramel popcorn, funnel cake, and malt-vinegar french fries mixed scents linger in the boardwalk air. 🍿It’s an easy drive past the Bay Bridge on 50 East… and then you’re there! From Northern Virginia, it’s a 4-hour drive.

ocean city md gem umbrella landscape

And as I grew older, I discovered there are much nicer beaches with seashells (aka blue-green water and sugar-fine sand 😊)…

But Ocean City MD is still one of the most happening beaches on the East Coast… and still always in my heart. ⛱️

It’s a great affordable vacation place to create memories… like I did where the older ones are in fuzzy memory photos (not like these). 😊

Meet Boots and all his fuzzy friends 🧸

Ocean City, MD is a great choice ⛱️ if you’re on a limited budget because you can drive to the beach without hassle AND there’s so much innocent putt-putt arcade entertainment for everyone… that’s retro-cheesy suitable for the beach setting, but maybe not back home. 😁 …and it’s still a great place to fly a kite. 🪁We got the same rainbow octopus tentacle kite each year or tossed a frisbee for no-frills fun.

People flock there from all-over the northeast even though there’s a closer Ocean City, NJ beach to them… so there must be something special about the fun Maryland beach and nearby Delaware beaches.

There’s something enjoyable for everyone. You can simply marvel over the outdoor sand art scene or on the iconic white wooden benches you can flip the back around to timelessly enjoy the ocean or people watch.

But as I entered my 30s, my tastes had refined… so I found this hidden gem hotel, Coconut Malorie’s, that’s on the quieter bay side (away from the busy lights and sounds, and riff-raff boardwalk areas of the beach town).

With age, you get wisdom and can easily switch standards back and forth from good ‘ol American beach fun, and adventurous Agadir or Cinque Terre azure blue ocean and mountainous beach terrains. It’s like neon-lit Vegas versus demure Paris. It’s all good in the contentment of life! 🥂

At any beach, everyone is more carefree and has sand in their toes that helps to make life lighter. 🩴 You forgive the wet bathing suits and flip flops eating outside enjoying crabs and lobster bites that bond our experience with other vacation-goers.

When you had enough beach entertainment, you get to drive back to your relaxing hotel. And at the Malorie, you drive back to the cute outlined cut-out windows that BTW have made a comeback in HGTV home trends. You reflect on how far you’ve come staying in a cute modern doll house.

And at the Malorie, you can enjoy a lovely Juliette balcony with French Doors and a cool view of the bay to appreciate even more how far you’ve come.

If you want to feel grown up or in your own tropical oasis with bay views, a nice pool, and your own refrigerator (critical for beach living!)… plus, warm beachy sand pastel vibes, then this could be your place at least for a temporary stay.

One of the best times to visit Ocean City MD is over Labor Day weekend when you catch the last few days (but not the last rays ☀️)of summer and enjoy the tail-end of famous Maryland crabs doused with Old Bay. 🦀

And if you’re with the kiddos (or someone else’s kiddos), take them to the Carousel Hotel that’s kid-friendly. The hotel is a local tradition (where weddings still take place) and overnight offers include breakfast, free cancellation and built-in entertainment options.

I remember the days when we would go by in the winter and this hotel was one of the still-open spots with a year-round public ice skating rink! ⛸️… plus outdoor/indoor pools, table tennis, and game room.

And having worked in restaurants in the summer Ocean City MD gem during college summer breaks as a getaway from the city (Washington DC), I got a new appreciation for fresh see-food year-round.

And on bayside up Coastal Highway (the main drag) is a hidden food-ier experience. 🍽️ : The Hobbit Restaurant… yes, named after The Hobbit (pre-Lord of the Rings) fantastical trilogy by Peter Jackson. This could be your new destination.

Copenhagen Amusement Park Hidden Gem

Tivoli Copenahgen Amusement Park on the exterior

The Copenhagen amusement park scene needs to be on your bucket list if you like amusement. Maybe you visit the happiest city in the world for your birthday or an anniversary. 🎂

The park is close to city center but far enough to stand out on its own.

City center is reminiscent of many cobblestone streets in Europe and a clean, modern vibe without the downsides of city life. You may hear an occasional bicycle bell but that blends into the calm living air that’s not crowded.

And part of this calm Copenhagen living, is cycling around town. With the summer’s Tour de France 🚴‍♀️🚴🚵‍♀️ competition that happens further south, we learn that Jonas Vingegaard has won for the 2nd year in a row.

Famous Nyhavn and storybook building fronts are near the Copenhagen Amusement Park

It’s no surprise he’s Danish because Denmark is the top bicycle city. And you don’t have to look far to see a cyclist in the city. They bike everywhere and confidently along highway streets.

And whether by wheels or feet, when you want to shake it up, Tivoli Gardens amusement park is a good spot to hang out. Start off with your visit in the day where you can appreciate the gardens, whimsical design theme choices, and architecture, but be sure to stay for the lights at night (and maybe plan for the Friday live music entertainment).

It’s kinda like souped-up Busch Gardens (if you’re familiar with the Williamsburg, VA theme park) where you want to see and appreciate park details and landscape outlines in the day, but also get the dazzle of the European-style carnival night life that’s lit up.

Tivoli Gardens is a smaller theme park and not too crowded. But don’t let that fool ya! Tivoli Gardens also has fireworks 🎆 during certain occasions like Easter 🐣 Summer is also a good time to go.

It’s also one that Disney modeled some of their theme parks after 🦄, and caught the unconventional inspiration from with all its creative rides and colors. And when you visit, you’ll understand why.

Before you freak out on the ticket prices, note it’s in Danish Krona (that today in writing this is about 7x the US Dollar, and that’s a lot less than half or a third of the price you’d pay in a U.S. theme park).

Inside, if you like the circus environment, you’ll love this Copenhagen Amusement Park that’s full of sightseeing surprises 🍭🎠

You think you’re riding into the future or somewhere Far East (or maybe outside this Universe 🪐). And at the least, you’ve never seen these wild-bending rides. Here’s one ride shot below… but for the others, you’ll have to check it out for yourself!

And they have 70 (and maybe some 70s decade-inspired) gourmet eatery, cafe, restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shops… and fantasical shop fronts, like a Marshmallow Shop (how fun!).

Foodie foods range from churros, lobster, and sushi, plus fun boardwalk faves like bougie ice cream, popcorn, and cotton candy, to name just a few. If you’re not entertained with just the food scene ambiance and fun-decorated shops, I’d be shocked! And if you’re not hungry (that I think you will be 😋), I’ll be wondering. 💭

There’s also free entrance to the Tivoli Food Hall in case you’re meeting up with people who don’t want to go to the Amusement Garden Park.

And being the planner that I am (and for a decade), a cute place to stay that is walking distance to the Copenhagen Amusement Park is an affordable hotel find called the Imperial Hotel that you can walk comfortably to with your friends or companion, as I did on my visit. 💕

What I love about the hotel is the simplicity, and the room headboard is huge so it makes the ceiling look expansive. There are also homey velvety touches that soften the tight bed corners.

You can full chill-ax after you’ve got your fill of amusement. And the bathroom has spa-esque calm colors with thoughtful warm lighting. ✨ I’ll be back!

Visit San Diego Baseball Park When In Town

Historic Gaslamp Quarter near the San Diego baseball stadium

If you’re a baseball fan, San Diego Baseball is one of San Diego’s identities and the schedule is in full swing … like many major American cities, it has its own national baseball stadium and team. It’s not named after one animal, but many kinds and not just oriole birds or cubs… it’s the Petco Park Stadium that appreciates cats and dogs alike. 🐱🐶 And their owners. 😊 That includes Padres (means father). Go Padres! ⚾️

And you can catch a glimpse of this San Diego baseball park from the hotels and buildings nearby.

One such hotel is the Omni Hotel that you can’t help but get in the batting zone frame of mind. Decorated with famous baseball player bats and balls throughout… um, have you heard of Babe Ruth and Yogi Berra? Regardless, you will in this baseball vibe museum hotel.

legendary Babe Ruth san diego baseball bat in hotel

San Diego is an area that is a popular dream place for young professionals. It’s low in humidity and known for its better weather reputation close to the water and mountains. Hello, sunshine and relaxtion! ☀️

I have many memories in San Diego and Pacific Beach with family and friends including my Carbsbad wellness memories a little up north. And at the Omni you can catch some wellness rays at the pool or get a massage especially if you’re there for a convention like I was!

And walking distance to the convention-centric San Diego hotel is the downtown San Diego Convention Center. Getting there, you may stumble over some Bird scooters… are those still around? 🛴

I tried one around the city in the Gaslamp Quarter and discovered it’s not safe or reliable. It could die on you at any time which works for its drop-off anywhere convenience (or inconvenience if you trip over one 🤨). It’s tempting to ride with flip flops with the beachy relax vibes minutes away. 🩴 But save them for the sand.

Electric bike could be a better-controlled ride. Just sayin’! And don’t forget to get a nearby bite along the San Diego Bay water by Seaport Village. A good place to do that is next to The Kiss or The Unconditional Surrender statue you can find in other palm-lined states (hint: it’s on the east coast and the largest producer of oranges that’s not California 😉).

South Carolina Back-to-School Tax-Free Shopping Weekend

This post contains affiliate links. You do not pay additional by making a purchase through an affiliate link, which helps to support this blog’s livelihood.

south carolina back-to-school tax-free weekend includes shoes
Shoe fetish anyone? 👠 Get ’em tax free while you can. Everyone needs a good occasion shoe that won’t break your neck, and so you can appreciate your everyday tennis shoes.

It’s almost back-to-school time and IT’S South Carolina back-to-school tax-free shopping this weekend in South Carolina. I grew up in Virginia that paused the annual tax-free weekend… and North Carolina ended.

So now’s a good time to head further south to South Carolina that’s the east coast hospitality 🍍 state. There, it’s a good time to buy your computer, school supplies, and clothing (including shoes in case you have a fetish!). And bed and bath items in case you’re going to back a school door room. Who came up with this creative list??

And remember South Carolina has a couple hot spots and close to the ocean water! ⛱️

Both Myrtle Beach and Charleston (the capital) are in the Palmetto State. Either would be great to fill the rest of your August Dog Day calendar and provide a last-summer effort travel escape.📆

…Myrtle Beach has hotels with lazy river pools that’s heat relief entertainment. You can go to The Breakers for one.

…And Charleston is known for the quaint city that goes back to horse drawn carriages. The Charleston Place hotel is the Ritz. And Charleston Grill in the hotel is fine dining at its best with scrumptious fare.

Now I know you’re tempted and if you can’t make it via travel, the South Carolina back-to-school tax-free can be done online! You can shop where you are… tax-free items include flip-flops 🩴, inline and ice skates ⛸️, boots 👢, and this tax-free holiday long list. I’m sure you’ll find something from these common everyday shopping lists.

And if August isn’t your time to visit, Charleston Restaurant Week is in September. You can check out the Summer New York Restaurant Week and DC Restaurants I love.

They’re an up and comin’ food destination town to come back and checkout 😉

2023 Amador County Barbera Wine Festival

Amador County Barbera Wine grapes

Amador County Barbera wine is one of the hidden best wine areas in California. It’s off the beaten path from other big wine valley counties like Napa or Sonoma County. Amador County is east of Sacramento, CA and produces some of the best red wines if I may say so. 😊

The highest mountain vineyard terrains are compared to the Mediterranean foothills exposed to long sunny days suitable for tasty wines. And, Amador County is is also credited with cultivating the first Zinfandels.

Amador County Barbera wines are like a Syrah or Shiraz with fruit-forward jammy berry flavors like raspberries and strawberries. If that’s your jam, then a Barbera can grow on you fast.

And to get some tastes, you may want to visit the Barbera Festival (in its 10th year) with over 40 wineries to try in one fell-swoop. 🍷

Amador County Barbera Wine county grapes

Amador County is in the Sierra Nevadas mountain range. And one boutique quality vineyard in the heart of Plymouth, CA is Coopers Vineyards. The wines you taste in the boutique winery store may not change your life, but they can definitely change your wine life! ❤️

They produce winners at the Orange County Fair wine competitions with an unforgettable Petite Syrah and Primitivo Reservo and unique Sangiovese (it’s not just in Italy anymore!). From Folsom Lake, you can go south on Latrobe Road and turn on Shenandoah Road to find this winery and vineyard.

Cooper Amador County Barbera Wine prodcer in Plymouth, CA

Coopers will be at the the Amador County Barbera Wine Festival where you can sample their Barberas. The festival is in Plymouth, CA next to Coopers at the Terra D’Oro Vineyards (Land of Gold) with 800+ acres. Traces of gold are found in the vineyard land in case you’re wondering…

And in these superior lands, to make your trip planning life easy, you can turn your “gold” trip into a hotel spa trip for maximum joy or a boutique stay in the heart of downtown Plymouth, CA. That’s my two senses (and cents!). 🍇

Royal London Food Carnival

royal scallop dish fit for a royal London food carnival.

I can sniff a food festival from around the globe… and a London food carnival is happening at the Hampton Court Palace. The 👑 palace looks like it’s straight out of a storybook in its spire features and symmetrical architecture.

And it reminds me of the brick facade on the iconic Smithsonian Castle near the National Mall Smithsonian Carousel on the other side of the ocean. That was my first merry-go-round riding memory. 🎠

And this Hampton Court Palace Food Festival is happening on the manicured lawns next to the Palace and Magic Garden playground for all ages. And a Kitchen Garden for foodies at the London food carnival.

The Palace has history and inside even has artwork from Rembrandt and Caravaggio. It’s situated near the seasonal Ice Rink and The Great Fountain Garden (with wildflowers, seasonal flowers, and of course my fave, a Rose Garden with pink roses). On the western outskirts of central London, you can visit two-in-one and make a one-stop-shop.

The garden was recently completed with 13 fountains and artistic Baroque design that actually matches the nearby castle. 🏰

You wonder where the moat is. 💭

And if that doesn’t flip your boat, then a Restaurant Show is coming to London in Olympia, closer to Chelsea, that’ll showcase new hospitality trends. It’s where caterers and chefs experience the latest and greatest, and probably you do too…. who doesn’t love to taste good foods!

And don’t be surprised if you see Great British Baking Show (or Great British Bake Off) former contestants like Nadiya Hussain (from Nadiya Bakes) who may shows up at these events. 🎉 And who knows who else?

…That to me would be worth the trip.😊

If you want to stay more city central in Westminster, you can try this mod, delightfully designed Georgian castle-like boutique hotel.

California State Carnival Happening

california state carnival is in Sacramento and has the traditional merry go round that goes around the country

Who doesn’t love a State Fair? They happen at or near the state’s capital… and today in summer, the California State Carnival is happening in Sacramento.

One of my secondary homes is California as family lives on the West Coast in the Golden State. I still remember my first trip to Northridge (near L.A.) attending a wedding and up the coast to Monterey.

California State Carnival surroundings in Sacramento area that has mountains and vineyards

And then many fun girl trips I had to San Francisco, touring Wine Country, and Sacramento.

I have fond memories with friends as we ate the best fresh seafood pasta dish at Sabella & La Torre along Embarcadero and Pier 45. It’s not a fancy place, but the food was outstanding and it has been running since 1927.

And when you’re done with a meal, you can feel like the nap-time San Francisco sea lions and work off your meal walking to Pier 39. An artsy affordable stay could be close by in Chinatown that’s a short ride to Fisherman’s Wharf that’s a year-round carnival with street performers and the famous Golden Gate Bridge. 🌁

Those food memories are unforgettable and you can make memories today at the California State Carnival. There’s a Food Festival going on that’s good fun food for little ones and young at heart. ❤️

At the fair, whether you like live horses, live concerts, or just being around the carnival atmosphere, it’s going on in August.

And even though it’s hot everywhere… you can do a quick cool in the slip-n-slide and waterlog flume rides.

And then at night see all the twinkling lights… ✨

Oh, and enjoy some lowkey sports… who doesn’t love a round of putt-putt?

At the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento, there are also upcoming events you may be interested in, like…

…A Foodie Land Event with over 170+ vendors!

…Or a Women’s come-together event in soul sisterhood. Neither of these ticketed events will break the bank.

And if you’re getting married, get all the favor ideas, and vendor resources, and try wedding cake morsels at the International Wedding Fair. Having been a wedding and catering event planner in a former life, I still appreciate and enjoy the girly good taste events. And, I’m all for the tastings big and small.

So… this can be a one-stop-shop for you at the California State Carnival.

Maryland Fair Farmers Market

The Maryland Fair Farmers Market is a summer and fall seasonal one-stop-shop market occurring while the Maryland State Fair is happening over several weekends and over Labor Day at the Timonium Fairgrounds (north of Baltimore, MD). Hint, hint… in case you needed some late summer ideas to fill your calendar. And entertain.

On the fairgrounds, there’s also an opportunity to learn about agriculture and sustainability in the farmers market building that you may not otherwise visit. And it’s a chance to get out of the city and see farm animals.

During the Maryland State Fair, you can also check out and enjoy the carnival festivities. 🎡 It’s a place full of fun ideas and to take kiddos where you can find many free or low-cost activities that don’t break the budget. And FREE entrance for the toddlers.

Ya just never know how those small events are excitingly BIG to little feet, and that they remember when they grow into their bigger shoes. 😊

This carnival also has 60+ rides and games good for all ages. And they’re surprises, so you may just have to get out there to see what they are! If you want to save $5, Chick-Fil-A has a ride coupon offered on the site.

maryland fair farmers market is a fun ticket for everyone

And the Maryland State Fair has all the lights and colors you’d expect at a carnival fair. And of course, cotton candy galore, and you can bet there are good eats like Maryland crabs. 🦀 And I hear there’s some judging going on over mac-n-cheese mini donuts, maple bacon iced tea, and unicorn ice cream… and all the whimsical foods you’d not eat on most days! 🦄

And even after the fair is over, you can still visit the farmers market as a permanent event summer and fall event with the Maryland fair farmers market vendors.

You can find all kinds of seasonal fruits and veggies, egg, poultry, and homemade cheese that’s healthier without hormones and preservatives.

Those are all good fairgoing take-homes that you’ll enjoy!
